Band Handbook 2010/2011
Dutton Christian School
Dutton ChristianSchoolMission:
The mission of Dutton Christian School is to integrate a Reformed understanding of the Christian faith into an education program of the highest quality.
Welcome to the handbook of the Dutton Christian Band!
As God’s children, we are called to live responsibly by reading and keeping His Word on our hearts. The study of music can be both rewarding and a lot of fun. While there are many social and behavioral benefits that are connected with music; there is also intrinsic value to musical expression and technique.
Dutton Christian Band Handbook
Welcome to Dutton Christian Middle School band. My name is Pamela Diephuis and I am the band director at Dutton Christian. I am proud to be a part of the Dutton Christian School community and I am excited to have you as a part of the music program! In the rest of this packet you will find some information including important dates for the year.
Communication:
It is extremely important that we keep a strong line of communication between school and home. Parents can expect communication going home that will contain pertinent information. I will use RenWeb and emails. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Extra Help:
It is my goal to keep students on the appropriate playing level. However, there may be a situation where a student is either struggling or excelling beyond expectations. If such a situation arises I will make myself available to help any student who may be struggling, or to supply advanced enrichment to those who require a bigger challenge. I also highly encourage students to take advantage of private lessons; I can supply names of qualified lesson teachers.
Uniforms:
For all 6/7/8 grade students, Dutton Christian polo shirts will be distributed for the November 4th, February 10th, and May 3rd concerts. For all other concerts, the students will wear their school theme shirt. Khaki pants or skirts, dark socks, and dark shoes are mandatory for all concerts. Regular school attire may be worn for the Christmas Chapel, Grand Parents Day, and the Pops Concert.
Fifth grade students will wear their school theme shirt, khaki pants or skirts, dark socks and dark shoes for all other concerts except for the Christmas Chapel, Grand Parents Day, and the Pops Concert when regular school attire may be worn.
Uniformity in concert settings is important for professionalism, our students work hard and we want them to sound and look nice. If there are any concerns about the uniform please contact me.
Items to Bring to Class:
Pencil
Instrument (sticks and mallets for percussionists)
Music and method book
Reeds – at least four
Grading:
Grades are computed based on the following areas:
20% - Practice Records:
Will be turned in at the scheduled dates, 90 minutes per weeks is required. If a student is sick or takes a vacation, they must make up the time in another week. Once a new nine week period begins, I will NOT accept practice records from the previous nine weeks.
40% - Participation:Students are expected to have their instruments, music, four working reeds if applicable, and a pencil in class every day. If an instrument is in repair, a note from home is required. In a rare case that an instrument needs repair, a Meyer Music representative will be on hand to pick it up on Thursday at the Middle School. Percussionists are required to have their own sticks. Students will be excused once each semester for forgetting their instrument. After that, students will receive a zero in participation for that day. Chewing gum during the class period will also result in a zero for the day and a red card.
35% - Concert Attendance:
Concerts are required with the exception of illness or family emergency, which must be excused with a phone call before the concert. If there is an absence that is not due to the above circumstances the grade will suffer greatly. The students work hard and deserve to receive recognition.
5% - Playing Tests and Quizzes.
Thank You,
Pamela Diephuis
